Screenplay Synopsis
"BREAK CONTACT" is a battlefield action movie in the same vein as Tears of the Sun, the latter Rambo films, and Blackhawk Down. An underhanded effort by a rogue element within the United Nations has taken hostages- both civilian and US Intelligence. It's up to a group of private mercenaries operating in a gray area along with a CIA plant to rescue the hostages.
During their initial rescue operation, one of their own, MAC, gets injured and captured by the enemy. He must use his wits and his skills to evade death until his companions can mount a full scale operation to bring him home.
In tone, the film should evoke elements from multiple genres- Action, Romance, Military/War, amongst others.
ELEVATOR PITCH:
Taking notes from films such as Tears of the Sun and Rambo (2008), Break Contact features a high adrenaline action film involving the rescue of American hostages from a rogue Russian military group. The film also draws upon the camaraderie and interpersonal relationships between the protagonist, Mac, his wife Sandy, and his team. During the film's third act, it shifts into a tone reminiscent of Blackhawk Down as they need to mount a rescue mission for Mac. This film fits well into the current political climate by capitalizing on the swiftness of soldiers to get crucified in the court of public opinion, and how sometimes they need to operate in the morally gray aspects of their orders. The action in this film's audience will draw in key demographics and has the potential with the right marketing to be an "event" film.

INITIAL SET-UP:
In one of the initial scenes MAC and SANDY, a married couple, are dealing with the fact that Mac has been called back into the field by his employer, CPS. This causes tension between the two of them, but they agree to discuss everything in full upon Mac's return from his mission.
Later, Mac meets up with the others on his team- DENNIS, DON, JOHN, and MARK- all tough military type men. Their camaraderie and ease with one another is evident from their first interactions. They are joined by STEVE, at the orders of their employer, who unknown to them is a CIA plant. Their pilots TIM and JACK are their lifeline in getting them in and out of the field.
STORY:
The plot starts with a group of CIA operatives disguised as telecom workers (unknown to the viewer), working on a tower near a UN base. This is an element of the UN that has been infiltrated by a rogue group of Russian military. They kill one of the CIA operatives and take the others hostage.
Mac wakes to a phone call informing him that he is being pulled back in for a rescue mission. He and his wife Sandy fight about his job, but he promises, upon his return, he will tell her everything. Mac leaves to join his team.
At an airfield, Mac joins the rest of his team. They initially balk at the idea of Steve joining their mission, but Dennis shuts down any arguments. Mac uses the time in the air to write a letter to Sandy. He leaves it with Tim for safe keeping.
They are dropped in by helicopter in a remote section of the country of Georgia. They find the building where the hostages are being kept, and tactically storm it, successfully retrieving the CIA operatives. Mac gets caught in a blast, and has to fight his way out of the facility solo. On his way he rescues three doctors that have been taken hostage as well.
Eventually, he rejoins his team and they convene on an escape plan after being informed that they are being put out into the cold and cannot depend on CPS for extraction. Meanwhile, at home, Sandy sees a news broadcast reporting on a rogue terrorist operation headed by Americans- essentially, putting Mac and his team on the outside of the law and on their own.
As the story progresses, the team suffers losses, and the apparent loss of Mac as he sacrifices his ability to escape so that the remaining team can get to safety. Once safe on the USS Ronald Reagan, the team mounts a rescue operation with a Seal Team led by a friend of Mac's. The Seal Team also has ANDREW, Mac's son as a member.
They mount a successful rescue operation, and take down one of the leaders of the rogue UN group in the process. During the rescue operation, the team was able to disseminate information that cleared their names and exposed the corrupted element in the UN.
At the closing, Mac and Sandy come to an understanding about his occupation. As they talk a news broadcast reports on nuclear weapons testing in North Korea, and Sandy let's Mac know that she's good with him doing whatever he wants to do. She's in it with him.
